The short answer

A board foot is one square foot of foam one inch thick, so board feet equal sprayed area times thickness in inches. Angi and HomeAdvisor give installed ranges of $0.60 to $1.60 per board foot for open-cell and $1.30 to $3.10 for closed-cell. Some contractor sites publish narrower, lower ranges. Multiply your board feet by a quoted rate, then add minimum charges and any excluded work to compare bids.

For example, 1,000 square feet sprayed three inches thick equals 3,000 board feet. At an illustrative installed rate of $1.25 per board foot, the foam charge is $3,750.

The catch? Some contractors quote a unit rate, others a fixed project price, and some published guides mix board-foot and square-foot costs. Below is how to calculate and compare them properly.

Why are prices so variable? Spray Foam Science[3], a site that runs an installer-referral service, cites narrower installed ranges of about $0.45–$0.65 for open-cell and $1.00–$1.50 for closed-cell. Those figures are not necessarily contradictory: project size, labor markets, overhead, prep and what gets included in “installed” can differ. Do not combine them into one supposedly precise national average.

Use broad prices to budget. Use written, itemized local quotes to buy.

What Is a Board Foot of Spray Foam?

The Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance[4] defines a board foot as 12 inches × 12 inches × 1 inch of material. It measures volume, not surface area alone.

A board foot can mean one square foot at one inch thick, half a square foot at two inches thick, or one-quarter of a square foot at four inches thick.

This is why a 1,000-square-foot wall insulated to four inches requires 4,000 theoretical board feet, not 1,000.

How to Calculate Board Feet for Spray Foam

Formula: Board feet = treated square feet × insulation thickness (inches).

Then: Estimated installed foam charge = board feet × quote per board foot.

Example: 500 Square Feet of Wall at 3.5 Inches

  • Surface being sprayed: 500 sq ft
  • Thickness specified: 3.5 inches
  • Board feet: 500 × 3.5 = 1,750
  • Illustrative open-cell rate: $0.90 per board foot
  • Calculated foam charge: $1,575

This is arithmetic, not a recommendation that every wall should receive 3.5 inches. Required thickness is determined by the specific foam product, building assembly and applicable energy codes.

Example: 800 Square Feet at Two Inches

For 800 square feet at two inches, the volume is 1,600 board feet. Using a hypothetical closed-cell rate of $1.75 per board foot, the result is $2,800 before excluded work.

Small jobs may be subject to a minimum crew charge, making the effective price per board foot higher.

Example: 1,200 Square Feet of Roof Deck at 5.5 Inches

1,200 × 5.5 = 6,600 board feet.

At a hypothetical $0.85 installed per board foot, the foam charge is $5,610. This assumes 1,200 square feet is the actual roof-deck surface area, not the floor area of the house.

How Board-Foot Pricing Converts to Square-Foot Pricing

Multiply the board-foot rate by the thickness in inches. At Angi’s and HomeAdvisor’s ranges[1][2], each inch adds $0.60–$1.60 per square foot for open-cell and $1.30–$3.10 for closed-cell. The cost per square foot page has the full table by thickness.

Open-Cell vs Closed-Cell Spray Foam: Which Costs Less?

Open-cell has the lower price per board foot, but closed-cell gives more R-value per inch, so it needs fewer board feet for the same R-value. The fair comparison is cost at equal R-value, worked through on the open-cell vs closed-cell cost page.

Why Installed Board-Foot Prices Differ Between Contractors

Foam Type, Product and Specification

Two products described as “closed-cell” can have different declared insulating values, installation limits and code approvals. Ask for the manufacturer, exact product name and technical data sheet.

Minimum Job Charges

A small rim-joist job may require a crew, spray rig and setup even though the sprayed volume is modest. A contractor may impose a minimum invoice. For example, a $1,500 minimum on a 500-board-foot job is effectively $3.00 per board foot, whatever the advertised unit price.

Surface Access and Preparation

Spraying exposed new-construction framing is not the same job as entering a confined crawl space, removing old insulation or working around pipes and ducts. Preparation, masking, substrate repairs and demolition can alter the quote substantially.

Required Thickness

Thicker foam uses more theoretical board feet. Professional systems may require multiple installation passes with manufacturer-specified conditions. Contractors should identify the target depth and how they will verify it.

Fire Protection and Building Codes

Many exposed foam installations require an approved thermal barrier, ignition barrier or code-accepted protective assembly, depending on location and use. Never assume the raw foam can remain exposed.

Regional Labor and Travel

Rates vary across US markets and with distance from the contractor’s operating area. A nationwide price range cannot replace bids for the actual site.

Additional Services

Old-insulation removal, moisture repairs, finishing materials, drywall, access platforms, ventilation arrangements and cleanup may be excluded from the headline price.

How to Compare Two Board-Foot Quotes Correctly

Compare totals for the same scope, not unit rates. Quote A: 2,000 board feet × $1.20 = $2,400, with coating and preparation excluded. Quote B: 2,000 board feet × $1.35 = $2,700, with both included. Quote A is only cheaper if the excluded work costs less than $300. The quote checklist lists what each bid should state.

Board-Foot Pricing vs DIY Spray Foam Kits

DIY kit pricing is usually materials only and is not directly comparable to professional installed pricing.

HomeGuide’s DIY guide[5] reports roughly $0.80–$1.80 per board foot for DIY spray foam on average, varying with package size and foam type. Advertised kit coverage may be theoretical; field yield can differ because of temperature, technique and waste.

Two-component spray polyurethane foam also introduces chemical exposure risks. The US EPA[6] recommends work-zone isolation, appropriate PPE and ventilation. Occupants should leave during application and follow product-specific curing and re-entry instructions; there is no universal safe re-occupancy time for every foam and project.

For substantial wall, attic and crawl-space work, professional proposals deserve serious consideration rather than assuming DIY materials produce an equivalent finished installation.

Common Board-Foot Cost Mistakes

Using floor area: The surface to spray may be much larger than the home’s square footage, especially on roof slopes and walls.

Forgetting thickness: One square foot at four inches is four board feet, not one.

Comparing different insulation systems: Two quotes need the same scope and acceptable thermal, moisture and fire performance.

Ignoring minimum charges: A nominal unit rate may be irrelevant to a tiny project.

Assuming zero waste: Calculated finished volume does not guarantee exactly matching chemical consumption or kit yield.

Overlooking excluded work: Prep, barriers, demolition and finishing may cost more than the apparent per-board-foot saving.

Questions owners ask

What is a board foot of spray foam?

A board foot is 12 × 12 × 1 inches of foam volume, equivalent to one square foot at one inch thick. This is the definition used by the Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance.

What is the average cost per board foot for spray foam?

Angi's US installed price ranges are $0.60–$1.60 for open-cell and $1.30–$3.10 for closed-cell. Local and contractor-specific figures may be narrower or fall outside those bands.

How many board feet do I need for 1,000 square feet?

Multiply 1,000 by the intended thickness in inches. That gives 2,000 board feet at two inches, 3,000 at three inches or 5,500 at 5.5 inches.

How much does 1,000 board feet of spray foam cost?

At the broad Angi installed ranges, approximately $600–$1,600 open-cell or $1,300–$3,100 closed-cell, excluding separately charged work.

Is a board foot the same as a square foot?

No. Square feet measure surface area; board feet measure foam volume by including thickness.

How much waste should I allow?

No single universal percentage accurately covers every job. Ask installers to identify any yield or waste assumptions and how they affect a fixed-price or quantity-based proposal.

Is board-foot pricing better than total project pricing?

Board-foot rates improve transparency, but the total installed cost for an identical scope is the figure that decides which bid is better value.
